Jabalpur Cantonment, listed as one of the 62 military Cantonments of India, is considered as one of the largest and most popular cantonment town, occupying a vast area of 7040 acres, upholding a population of 66,499 people according to 2001 Government of India Census, comprising of Army formations, Military Establishments , Central Government units and Civil areas , many of them focussed on education and training, administered by an efficient cantonment board offering excellent facilities and amenities equally to residential outlets and official functioning of establishments.
When British occupied Jabalpur, the then Jabbalgarh, of 1818 CE after defeating Maratha Kings , they made this place their commission headquarters of Saugor and Nerbudda territories, establishing the Jabalpur Cantonment, later this place then known as Jubbulpore Cantonment came to limelight when Gadadhar Tiwari, a revolutionary military personnel opened fire on the British Superiors as his contribution to the Independence Struggle, which aroused the Independence spirit of people all over the country.
After Saugor and Nerbudda Territories were merged with Central Provinces of 1861, Jabalpur Cantonment gained more prominence, particularly when this place became the Brigade HQ of 1903.
